Earlier this week we sat down at a water-side pub in North Wales, The Mulberry, to have a natter with Ben Seas, owner of Seas Design. Seas Design offer branding and graphic design services UK wide, specialising in visual identity and communication design. We were lucky enough to work with Ben on our Studio Concept North brand ID recently and we just had to share his talent…
Ben, you’ve taken the graphic design world by storm here in North Wales. Can you tell us a little more about how Seas Design was born?
Well, you could say it started right here at The Mulberry. I worked here whilst studying for a BA in Graphic Design. I knew I wanted to do something for myself and whilst chatting with one of my colleagues about my next steps, they suggested I started freelancing. I didn’t really know much about freelancing at the time or what it really involved, but I started by offering 5 local businesses a free project. Really it was just a side-gig to build a portfolio. Things really evolved from there and as time went on, more and more businesses wanted to work with me. By the end of 2017 I went full-time with Seas Design and went on to study a masters in 2018. Seas Design now focus solely on branding, design & social media management working with a wide range of clients from a variety of industries.
For those of us that don’t really understand it, what exactly is branding and why is it so important?
Branding gives people an impression of who you are, what you believe in and what you represent as a business. It gives people an idea of the type of customers you want to work with and what type of product or service you have to offer. In your case, what type of projects you want to work on too. Branding is powerful and when done properly, it can grow your business tenfold.
OK, so luck as us designers, you start each project with a brief. What do you think forms a good brief?
When working with a client to form a brief, the first thing I do is get to know the business. I aim to get a clear understanding of what the business is, what does it do and what it has to offer. Only from there can I pull together a brand ID that is true to a business. The business and its ethos have to be at the heart of what I create. I take on-board any ideas the client has and can work to a tight brief if clients are after something specific they have in mind but generally, the most successful projects are created where the client leaves me to research and experiment, developing a concept from scratch.
Confession time – we love to Insta-stalk you to check out what you are working on! What is the most exciting thing you are working on right now?
I’ve had the joy of working work with a wide range of clients from a variety of industries such as finance, hair & beauty, home improvement, health & fitness and many more. From start-ups to established companies, our aim is always to maximise exposure and tie brand identity together. I’m working with Madoc Developments at the moment, a North Wales based residential development company, on a luxury sea-side development launching in 2020 to help promote sales. Firecracker are another one of my clients who are suppliers of luxury fireplaces and stoves, offering a bespoke and exclusive service. Working with Firecracker and learning about their products has been interesting – I didn’t realise such cool fireplaces were available! As for 2020, keep your eyes peeled, there’s lots going on in the background but little I can share right now I'm afraid!
We can’t wait to hear what Seas Design has in store for 2020! For anyone considering re-branding an existing business or branding a new one, we highly recommend Ben, you can check out his website here! For now, we’ll leave you with his Christmas Advert 2019. Get ready for a giggle!
